When autumn creeps in, I like to dive into a good mystery. Below are some recommendations for mystery stories that are both rich and creative. My Italian language recommendation is set in 1950’s Milan, and I liked the use of some classic Italian expressions within the story.
The 7½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle By Stuart Turton A page turner of a mystery that is creative, fun, and satisfying. I loved the characters, the setting, and the premise. I could not put this one down. Fiction / Mystery ISBN: 978-1492657965 |
Magpie Murders By Anthony Horowitz Another page turning mystery that recalls those quaint and intriguing British mysteries seen on BBC or PBS. The characters are both memorable and charming. Fiction / Mystery ISBN: 978-0062645234 |
The Truffle Underground By Ryan Jacobs A great retelling of the capers and thievery all revolving around the world-renown culinary jewel: the truffle mushroom. Non-Fiction ISBN: 978-0451495693 |
For Italian Language Readers
La Squillo e Il Delitto di Lambrate by Dario Crapanzano A great read, set in 1950’s Milan. A realistic story follows a relatable character named Rita who winds up investigating a murder to prove her friend’s innocence. Some use of Italian expressions, and great description of Milan of the period. Mystery / Giallo ISBN: 978-8893900485 |
